LAUSANNE, July 1 (Xinhua) -- Spain midfielder Aitana Bonmati has joined the rest of her teammates for the forthcoming European Championships just four days after being admitted to hospital in Madrid suffering from viral meningitis.
The 27-year-old flew out to the Spain squad's training base late on Monday night after being discharged from hospital on Sunday, when the rest of the squad travelled.
The twice Ballon d'Or winner spent Friday and Saturday nights in hospital after testing positive for the illness.
She is unlikely to be available for Spain's opening game against Portugal on July 3, although coach Montse Tome has highlighted that the player who has 30 goals in 78 appearances for her country is "so important for us and we will wait for her, whatever happens, until the end."
Spain plays Belgium on July 7 and Italy on July 11 in the group stage and the reigning world champion is one of the clear favorites for the tournament.
Spain's second injury worry ahead of Thursday's debut is goalkeeper, Cata Coll, who is suffering from tonsillitis. ■
