SANTIAGO, Oct. 10 (Xinhua) -- The National Seismological Center of the University of Chile reported a 7.8-magnitude earthquake with a depth of 10 km, and tremors were felt in surrounding areas.
According to Chilean authorities, no casualties or material damage have been reported so far.
Following the earthquake, the Chilean Navy's Hydrographic and Oceanographic Service declared a state of caution for the Antarctic territory.
The GFZ German Research Centre for Geosciences said the earthquake's magnitude was 6.9, with a depth of 10.0 km, initially determined to be at 60.13 degrees south latitude and 61.80 degrees west longitude.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the earthquake's magnitude was 7.6, with a depth of 10.5 km. ■
